Breaking News: MYANMAR

Cyclone Nargis survivors left without aid as Myanmar's military junta delays visa requests

The powerful cyclone swept through the country's low-lying river delta regions barely a week ago, but the devastation continues to rage. It is estimated that 1.5 million people are now in need of immediate assistance. While the official government death toll remains at 22,000, some organizations predict the actual number could top 100,000.

Despite the grim reports, good news is also coming from Yangon. VBCI student and friend Judy Albert survived the ordeal, as did her mother and the children in their orphanage. Their buildings suffered structural damage, but remains intact. There is no electricity and it is a long walk to find safe drinking water, but they are grateful for your prayers, and thankful they were spared.

* Special report: Crisis in Myanmar

Not everyone was as fortunate. John and Judy’s church was totally destroyed as well as some of the houses of the church members. Two pastors and two church members are missing and presumed dead. All around them are similar tragedies.

The Continuum team are hoping to obtain visas this week so we can get in there to encourage the believers and determine the best plan of action to help them in this crisis.

Please pray that the government will relax its resistance to aid workers and that those in need will get the help they require. Also pray for mission groups already in the area to be strengthened and encouraged as they bring a message of life to those surrounded by death and hopelessness.

A monumental humanitarian effort is crucial to saving and rebuilding the lives of the million homeless. We are receiving donations on behalf of John, Judy, Pastor Ram and our ministry family in Burma and pray that we will be able to bring fast relief in the very deadly situation of so many people who are without food, water or shelter.
